A Mother's Duty: Session 2
📜 Last Session
On her way to Stiltsfield, Setara meets a trader that was raided and takes him with her to the settlement. As he's cared for, she talks to Tio, an old childhood friend and presumably the only person there, who doesn't shun her. He tells her about recurring visits from a band of raiders, demanding tribute. When mentioning, they seem to send a part of it to someone else, Setara's curiosity is sparked.
After paying her father's grave a visit, she swears an Iron Vow to stop the raiders from terrorising Stiltsfield any further. Tio can only provide very rough directions by following a river near Stiltsfield upstream to the lake, where the raiders have made camp.
The journey begins
Setara leaves the road between Stiltsfield and Razorbill Harbour to follow the river upstream.

Before noon, Setara reached a small clearing besides the river. On the ground, ringed by some stones, she found coal and ashes from a recent campfire. There had to be more tracks or clues.

Looking around the former campsite, Setara found tracks of horses, carts and people. Nothing unusual, but there were also tracks of at least one boar. If they have had an encounter was hard to tell, but possible. One way or the other, Setara was now prepared to look out for signs of wild boars.

In the afternoon, Setara reached a bridge crossing the river. An interesting sight, as that meant this location was used more regularly. In fact, at the other site was a more frequently used path through the vegetation and the tracks she found pointed her to follow the path eastwards.

As dusk drew nearer, Setara decided to pause her journey for the day. As her supplies ran low, she decided to set up some traps and forage for wild vegetables.

As she sang the keen for those foes, Zakaria's Vengeance had slewn, the blade began to vibrate subtly in the rhythm of Setara's song. It hadn't needed that resonance, as Setara knew that the ritual was successful.

Setara awoke, as dawn faintly broke and painted her surroundings in the red light of a new day.

Setara is knocked down
The boar breached through the shrubs besides the path and took Setara by surprise. Although she was able to avoid being impaled by the boar's tusks, she lost her footing and fell to the ground. She braced for the boar to charge at her again. Not able to use her sword efficiently in this position she first had to get back on her feet.

Swirling around, her glance locked onto the boar, as it stumbled and fell to the ground by the sudden loss of a leg, Setara pursued. She closed the gap between herself and the sliding and rolling animal before it could adapt and stand back up. With a precise stab, Setara pushed her blade into the boar's skull.
Lost Game
The boar didn't move anymore. Setara catched her breath and retrieved the blade from the wild animal's skull. Cleaning the blood from the blade, Setara looked over the massive body of the boar, laying there. It would be a waste to give all of the remains to the wolves...

Rotten Flesh
A rotten smell emanated from the boar as Setara took out her hunting knife to begin skinning the corpse. The blade sunk under the boar's skin and the stench grew almost unbearable. It was obvious, that the flesh was already rotting away and now Setara also realised, the blood leaking from the wounds she inflicted during the fight was almost black and coagulated, just as if this animal had already been dead for some time. This flesh was definitely inedible. Could it be a severe illness? She has heard about such illnesses, but that would have not allowed the boar to fight back as vigorously as it had. She gave up on trying to get some rations from the boar, but her curiosity was sparked. With a skilled cut, she opened up the boar's stomach. The stench of decay made her nauseous and she backed off with the bitter taste of bile in her mouth, fighting back the urge to throw up. The boar's organs were already decomposing, oozing black gunk onto the ground. There was no natural explanation for why this creature had still been moving.
